Three-footed turtle of the Kuang River, Qing Shanhaijing manuscript

Anonymous Qing-period artist; Shanhaijing tu, 1644–1911; National Central Library, Taiwan, NCL-08481 · Public domain · Image source

The caption identifies a three-footed turtle from the Kuang River. The shell pattern, colours and hornlike projection belong to this later painter’s interpretation; the received Central Mountains passage supplies three feet but no horn. Its claim about swelling belongs to the historical text, not modern medical evidence.

Overview

The Kuang River rises on the sunny side of the mountain written 大𩇵 in this witness and flows southwest into the Yi. Its waters contain many three-footed turtles, 三足龜. The notice attributes freedom from grave illness and relief of swelling to eating them, as a historical textual claim rather than established medical guidance. It supplies neither a horn nor a colour, voice, individual name or origin story; no further anatomy is inferred from later pictures.
