Overview

National Museums of Kenya describes the Agikuyu, also called the Kikuyu, as a central Bantu community around Mount Kenya. Their areas include Murang'a, Nyeri, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Kirinyaga and Nakuru. The museum relates them to the Embu, Kamba, Tharaka, Meru and Mbeere communities, as a cultural and historical relationship rather than a biological classification.

Museum objects show farming alongside exchanged ironwork, pottery and textiles, including pots built from particular clays. Foodways include githeri and mukimo. Social organisation distinguishes nyumba family units, mbari clans and itura neighbourhoods. These objects illustrate selected historical practices, not rules binding living people.

In tradition, Ngai, Gikuyu and Mumbi appear with nine daughters linked to clan traditions. This is an attributed traditional genealogy, rather than independently demonstrated descent. The museum also highlights Agikuyu roles in the anti-colonial struggle, including Mau Mau and the Kikuyu Central Association, and notes a changing modern culture.
