Overview

Keelbugs, or verivorr in Forerunner records, are engineered insectoid creatures used to maintain artificial ecosystems. Their precursor population came from a world later consumed by the Flood and devastated by the Halo Array. Lifeworker adaptation turned the animals into living maintenance tools, with forms suited to local needs. Scavenging removes corpses and debris, while the creatures themselves can become food for other animals in the system.

The official account also describes aggression toward outside intruders, allowing ecological upkeep to overlap with a form of defensive response. This is a living animal system rather than a mechanical Sentinel under another name. Keelbugs began as cut Halo development material, with corpse-disposal ideas that did not become a normal shipped Combat Evolved feature. Later official lore gives them a place in canon. The entry explicitly separates those production concepts, cosmetic references and the 2022 creature account, avoiding an invented original-game appearance or a separate species record for every minor engineered variation.

First appearances & development

The keelbug’s production history and its fictional biology were developed at different times. The original cleanup concept belonged to unfinished Halo development work. Official Cutting Room Lore subsequently established the Verivorr’s scavenging and engineered origin in 2022. This profile describes that account rather than treating an unused demonstration or cosmetic reference as proof of earlier playable wildlife.

02

Canon & continuity

The canonical ecology comes from the official 2022 Cutting Room Lore account, and the separate restoration feature explains the intended corpse-cleanup system and its unfinished status. The sources support an engineered scavenger, not a playable population in the released 2001 game. Halopedia is used as a secondary cross-reference for the cosmetic mention and the alternate Verivorr name.
