Overview

Kalasha cultural communities are living communities of the Bumburet, Rumbur and Birir valleys in Chitral, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In a 2026 tentative-list submission to UNESCO, Pakistan describes their surroundings as an active cultural landscape of ceremonial halls, altars, fields and pastures under customary governance. The dossier states the position of Pakistan and is not a World Heritage inscription.

Suri Jagek, meaning observing the sun, is a documented practice. Observers track the sun, moon, stars and shadows against the local topography to time sowing, livestock work and festivals. Oral stories, songs, proverbs and rhetoric carry this knowledge. Practice varies, and the record does not imply that every person holds identical beliefs.

In 2018, UNESCO added Suri Jagek to its List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding. The record notes adaptations to modern life and reduced awareness among younger generations. It treats transmission as an active concern rather than as a fixed tradition. Language details are outside the scope of the cited sources.
