Overview
Ka-ilio-hae’s unnamed dead sister meets him near Kekaa, the departure place for Maui’s ghosts, and is identified in Westervelt’s account as an aumakua-ho-ola, a spirit who makes alive. She warns him against her husband’s hospitality: eating the shadow food would prevent his return to ordinary life. She steers the inexperienced ghost with pushes and slaps when he is attracted to games and crowded houses.
After explaining Walia’s guarded entrance she retrieves her brother before the final call closes the realm. At his old house he fears the body and its smell. She forces him into its foot, keeps him from fleeing and drives him upward to the head. His family hears a sound and sees breathing return. Her relationship and restorative task define the figure; the episode does not provide an individual personal name or make her a dog despite her brother’s translated name.
