Overview

Ilu are air-breathing swimmers commonly found around Na’vi reef settlements. The official guide gives a broad size range, from two to fifteen meters, with seven meters as its stated average; that variation is a catalogue description, not an independently measured survey. An accustomed animal can accept a kuru connection from an experienced rider without forming the exclusive individual partnership associated with an ikran. This distinction makes ilu useful shared transport within reef life. A neural riding connection does not, by itself, establish ownership or prove that every wild animal immediately accepts a rider.

The Way of Water uses this marine setting to confront the Sully family with a different environment and way of moving. Air breathing means that ilu should not simply inherit every underwater capacity of a gill-breathing creature. The official appearance list also includes Flight of Passage, so the selected 2022 film account is not asserted as a complete earliest-appearance audit. Behind the film, Pete Zuccarini reports that mechanical ilu proxies supplied underwater movement reference. That practical work helped performers experience riding motion; it does not turn the fictional swimmers into machines or document a natural skeletal mechanism.

First appearances & development

This treatment centers the released 2022 reef portrayal and its official species guide. The publisher also lists Flight of Passage as an appearance, so a complete debut audit remains open. The forest direhorse comparison concerns riding arrangements rather than a claim that the two animals are the same species.

Canon & continuity

The official species entry supports respiration, settlement proximity, size variation and the nonexclusive bond. Frink’s firsthand production interview independently supports the mechanical motion-reference proxy. The film supplies the named narrative setting; neither the attraction nor a complete original film was newly replayed in this pass.
