Hahakigami, named plate by Toriyama Sekien

Hahakigami is labelled 箒神 in Sekien’s Hyakki Tsurezure Bukuro. A long broom leans against the eaves of a rustic building, but its bundled material forms a face with one large eye and a prominent nose. The broom’s handle continues downward toward the foreground. Straw roofing and scattered leaves connect the transformed implement with the work of sweeping and the household environment. Caption label checked at enlarged resolution.

Overview

Straw roofing and scattered leaves connect the transformed implement with the work of sweeping and the household environment.

The drawing preserves the recognizability of the tool while turning its upper portion into a creature. This is not the neighbouring spear-related spirit previously suspected from a small contact-sheet thumbnail: the enlarged heading and visible broom settle that distinction. The image supplies a household implement’s animated appearance, but it does not independently document a ritual involving brooms or childbirth. Religious and practical uses of brooms need their own witnesses before they can be attached to this specific illustrated being.
