Overview

Great Izuchi directs a patrol drawn from a larger herd of smaller Bird Wyverns. When prey appears or danger approaches, the leader commands its companions to coordinate movement and tail attacks. The ordinary Izuchi is omnivorous: its curved tail helps it climb trees and cut fruit as well as fight. That wider feeding life keeps the species from being reduced to a monster that exists only to attack hunters. Rise places these creatures in the Shrine Ruins and Frost Islands; the large leader's build and conspicuous fur distinguish it from its chosen helpers.

The game's early urgent hunt, Great Izuchi, Great Pain, introduces the challenge of watching a group rather than a lone target. Sweeping tail strikes, overhead slams and projectile spit punish attention fixed only on the leader. Removing helpers changes the pressure of coordinated attacks, while tracking the leader's preparation gives opportunities to respond. Ichinose's Dengeki interview identifies the coordinated-trio kamaitachi motif. This is a production input, not a literal supernatural identity. Sunbreak retains the creature in a harder game context; stronger ranks and reward materials should not be counted as new species, and the two escorts are not the whole herd.

First appearances & development

Great Izuchi debuted in the released Monster Hunter Rise in March 2021, following the game's 2020 reveal and early demos. Sunbreak (2022) retained its pack-based encounter. This profile groups the leader with the ordinary Izuchi that explain its ecology; great denotes the selected herd leader, rather than an unrelated species.

Canon & continuity

Nintendo's official product page confirms the released game and Great Izuchi roster. Indexed game-note transcriptions supply herd selection and omnivory, while a specialist hunt guide documents tail and spit attacks. The original Japanese developer interview was independently read in a preserved HTML witness. Numerical damage, carve percentages and unconfirmed sex assignments are omitted.
