Overview

The early Derfland bestiary calls the goobbue a large amphibious omnivore, able to lash with flexible arms and open its jaws exceptionally wide. Parasitic moss grows in folds along its back and becomes an ingredient for potions and medicines. XI's specialist monster catalogue instead groups goobbues among plantoids; Square Enix's concept-art gallery uses the same plantoid heading. Both classifications are retained here as evidence from different contexts. The regional wording does not, by itself, prove a real-world amphibian lineage, and the later category does not explain away the animal-like feeding account. Either way, the creature's conspicuous body provides resources as well as danger.

The encounter record describes short legs beneath a massive body, with long arms providing reach despite relatively slow movement. Its attacks include a damaging, binding Beatdown and disabling effects such as Antiphase's silence. Named creatures inhabit locations including Pashhow Marshlands, Rolanberry Fields and the Sanctuary of Zi'Tah; their additional abilities need not be identical. Square Enix's comic Little Goblin Adventure supplies a smaller story-scale example. Fabmeister wakes in Jeuno after a goobbue knocked him unconscious in the Rolanberry Fields. His crab companion Thickshell claims to have defeated the monster, but Verena reports finding the crab by fruit baskets. The joke depends on contrasting the frightening encounter with the companion's unreliable boasting.

First appearances & development

The selected account concerns XI's 2002 world and the publisher's 2004 World Concept artwork witness. Goobbues also recur elsewhere in Final Fantasy, but this profile does not transfer mounts, geography or origin stories from those games into Vana'diel. The official comic and regional bestiary illustrate different ways XI presents the same monster family.

Canon & continuity

The Derfland page provides feeding anatomy and medicinal moss. The official artwork archive provides the plantoid label and identifies the 2004 collection. A separately authored publisher comic documents Fabmeister's encounter. Specialist records supply XI locations and attack effects; the comic's crab dialogue is treated as character testimony rather than an objective report of a victory.
