Overview
Glumdalclitch is the affectionate name Gulliver gives the farmer’s daughter in Brobdingnag. He translates it as little nurse, although the nine-year-old child is not above forty feet tall and is considered small for her age. This inversion of scale makes an ordinary adult traveller dependent on a child’s practical care. Her defining role is protective companionship rather than magical power: the selected episode describes her as good-natured, skilled with a needle and capable of teaching him her language.
She and her mother adapt a baby’s cradle for Gulliver, placing it in a cabinet drawer on a hanging shelf to protect him from rats. She makes seven shirts and other linen and washes them herself. By naming objects when he points to them, she enables him to ask for what he needs. She also calls him Grildrig, a name the family and later the kingdom adopt. Gulliver explicitly credits her care and affection with his preservation in the country.
Her father’s plan to exhibit Gulliver for money creates a conflict between her concern and the commercial value others see in him. She learns of the scheme from her mother and weeps, fearing that spectators may crush him or break a limb. She also understands the humiliation he would feel at becoming a public spectacle. Her comparison with a promised lamb later sold to a butcher shows that her concern includes both his safety and the family’s broken promise to let him remain hers.
During the market exhibition she stands on a low stool beside the table, supervises him and directs the answers and performances he has learned. She provides a thimble as a drinking cup and bedding for his travelling box. On the later journey she improves the box with soft cloth and a baby’s bed, and pretends to be tired of riding to spare him the horse’s jolting. These acts establish her as an active interpreter and protector within a situation she does not control. A modern scene of her attending Gulliver must retain their contrasting scale while acknowledging invented faces, fabrics and room details.
