Overview

The lizard appears in the Bundahishn as the evil spirit’s counter-creation against Gaokerena or Haoma in the deep ocean. Its purpose in the passage is to injure the tree associated with the future renewal of the universe.

Ten Kar fish oppose it, maintaining a circling guard. The text calls the lizard the greatest creature proceeding from the evil spirit and gives it, like the fish, spiritual sustenance throughout the long struggle. It is not given a personal name or a further bodily portrait, so the descriptive title preserves its particular opponent and role.
