Overview

Fwoopers are African magical birds with pink, orange, yellow or lime-green plumage. Their feathers are useful for decorative quills, and their brightly patterned eggs are prized for appearance. Sound creates the danger that colour disguises: continued exposure to their song damages a listener’s sanity within the fiction. A licensed keeper must purchase a silenced bird and renew its Silencing Charm each month. That requirement controls the song; it does not describe removal of the bird’s capacity to sing.

An official retelling of Newt’s footnotes supplies a cautionary example. Uric the Oddball challenges the warning by listening for three months, hoping to demonstrate health benefits. His appearance before the Wizards’ Council, unclothed apart from a supposed toupee made from a dead badger, defeats that claim in the story’s comic terms. This is a particular fictional experiment, not a medical case study or a numerical safe-exposure limit. The anecdote turns the bird from an attractive possession into a test of a keeper’s judgment.

First appearances & development

The 2001 companion bestiary supplies the selected description and Uric anecdote. Official features published in 2017 and 2021 revisit colour, regulated keeping and the failed experiment. Their publication dates describe explanatory articles, rather than independent creature debuts.

Canon & continuity

The complete Fwooper sections of both official features were inspected, including monthly charm renewal and Uric’s three-month experiment. They explicitly revisit the companion bestiary. The account keeps fictional consequences and comic presentation separate from real medical evidence, and does not infer an exposure threshold.
