Diricawl (Harry Potter)

Overview

Diricawls are plump, fluffy flightless birds that escape danger by disappearing in a burst of feathers and reappearing elsewhere. Within the fictional bestiary, they are the animals Muggles called dodos; their vanishing ability is offered as the wizarding explanation for apparent extinction. This is an invented reinterpretation of a real extinct bird, not an ornithological correction or evidence that living dodos have been discovered.

The companion-book conceit gives this creature a role in the setting's separation between magical and nonmagical knowledge. Official discussion explains that wizards leave the supposed extinction uncorrected because the lesson encourages protection of other birds. Hogwarts Legacy later supplies a licensed game encounter with a named Diricawl and a capture-related quest. That game character and its interaction rules belong to the game's implementation, rather than establishing the biology or history of every Diricawl.
