Overview

The Fuxi bird is a creature of Mount Lutai in the second western sequence of the Shanhaijing. It resembles a male chicken and has a human face. Its cry calls its own name. The text links its appearance with warfare, placing an unsettling human-animal mixture within a mountain inventory otherwise containing minerals and other animals.

The romanization Fuxi can resemble the name of a major culture hero, but the Chinese characters 鳧徯 identify this particular bird. No connection with that hero is established by the passage. The omen should likewise remain an association in the text, rather than a claim that the bird commands armies or deliberately begins battles. The source gives no extra wings, claws made of metal, or narrative in which a warrior defeats it.
