Overview
A felhound has a distorted canine outline, red hide, spines and two back tendrils ending in small sucking mouths. Those appendages drain magic, making predation more specific than ordinary biting. Warcraft accounts place the creatures in the Twisting Nether and use them as Burning Legion scouts and hunters. A magically gifted victim attracts them, but losing power does not end the physical danger. Later warlocks summon felhunters as anti-caster minions. Documented felhound/felhunter naming is grouped here; fel wolves and the separately named modern felstalker subject are not silently merged.
The classic neutral guide distinguishes Fel Beast, Fel Stalker and Fel Ravager ranks. The stalker uses Mana Burn, turning lost enemy mana into injury. The ravager instead adds Black Arrow and Devour Magic: the latter strips magical effects and replenishes the creature, while the former can create a skeleton from an affected slain unit. These are particular roster abilities rather than powers held by every animal using a related name. The creature’s story role remains clear across versions: it makes access to magic a liability and turns a spellcaster’s usual advantage into something a predator can exploit.
First appearances & development
Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos (2002) establishes felhounds in the selected Legion campaigns. The Frozen Throne guide and World of Warcraft expand the ranked-creature and warlock-minion treatments. Older Fel Stalker unit naming is retained with its game scope; it does not justify collapsing all later felstalker models or corrupted wolves into the same species.
Canon & continuity
Blizzard’s Fel Demons creature page directly supports the three classic ranks and their distinct spells. The specialist Felhound article supplies anatomy, magic feeding and campaign references, separately identifying the warlock minion. No freshly read complete novel or modern class-mechanics audit is claimed, and unreferenced fan explanations of conquered-world origins are not adopted.
