Overview
An exogorth’s open mouth can resemble a cave inside an asteroid closely enough for a spacecraft to land within it. In The Empire Strikes Back, the Millennium Falcon’s crew discovers damp, yielding surroundings and mynocks before realizing its refuge is a living creature. Escape requires passing the closing jaws. The official entry gives the encountered slug a length of 900 metres, which describes that enormous example rather than every member of the species. Other accounts distinguish ordinary maturation and reproduction by division from continued growth in individuals that do not divide. The habitat is thus both body and environment: smaller organisms can live within the giant, and the apparent shelter has its own responses and needs.
Later viewpoint fiction develops Sy-O, the Hoth creature, as an intelligent being concerned with the ecosystem it maintains. A specialist account records social esteem associated with hosting varied life. The 2020 story This Is No Cave belongs to that later portrayal, whereas the film presents the humans’ alarm. Silicon-based physiology and reproduction come from reference treatments rather than spoken exposition. This profile groups space slug with exogorth, avoiding two records for one species. Mynocks in the interior are cohabitants, not offspring.
First appearances & development
The space slug debuted in The Empire Strikes Back in 1980; exogorth is a later expanded-franchise name. Catherynne M. Valente’s This Is No Cave in the 2020 Empire Strikes Back viewpoint anthology develops Sy-O. Canon and Legends elaborations overlap in terminology but should not be treated as one uninterrupted biological handbook.
Canon & continuity
The official Databank witnesses the Falcon’s deceptive refuge, mynocks and escape. The specialist canon entry attributes intelligence, internal ecosystems and later social context; the story’s author and publication are independently checked. No fresh complete story or field-guide inspection is claimed. Priority 5 follows the later species culture, while its original monster role remains documented.
