Overview

Enenra is a smoke-associated figure in Sekien's Konjaku Hyakki Shūi. The printed design gives shifting vapour an apparent human presence, turning a material that continually changes shape into a named being. Smoke supplies the visual logic: a contour can seem to appear and dissolve without the creature needing an ordinary solid body. The profile is anchored in the historical picture rather than an elaborate catalogue of supernatural powers.

Modern retellings specify bonfires, moral qualifications for seeing the spirit or different ways that it can originate. Those details are not all equally supported by the eighteenth-century witness and should remain attributed to later explanations. Enenra illustrates the capacity of yōkai art to animate a transient phenomenon. This entry distinguishes that artistic personification from claims about combustion, airborne substances or an observable species living inside smoke.
