Overview

Doxies resemble small fairies but are covered in black hair and have venomous teeth. Their reported range includes northern Europe and America. They can colonise household curtains, turning neglected fabric into a hiding place for biting pests. Doxycide is used to immobilise them, while an antidote must be available if a worker is bitten. Their size does not make a mass infestation harmless, and resemblance to a fairy is a description of appearance rather than proof of shared ancestry.

In Order of the Phoenix, clearing the drawing-room curtains at Grimmauld Place becomes part of making the Black family's house usable as headquarters. Mrs Weasley supervises the task, but Fred and George secretly save immobilised specimens to investigate the venom for their Skiving Snackboxes. The scene gives the pest a second role as a potentially exploitable ingredient. A separate official banned-items feature associates dried Doxy droppings with an offered examination elixir; this does not establish that the product improves intelligence or that its student's sales pitch is reliable.

First appearances & development

The species account appears in the 2001 Fantastic Beasts bestiary. Chapter six of the 2003 Order of the Phoenix turns it into a sustained domestic cleaning episode. Later official web summaries connect the infestation to headquarters and discuss the purported examination aid, without supplying a separate origin for the animal.

Canon & continuity

The Lexicon identifies the bestiary and chapter-six passages behind the anatomy, disposal procedure and twins' experiment. The official Grimmauld Place entry confirms the infestation; the official banned list supplies the droppings anecdote. This account keeps immobilisation distinct from killing and ingredient use distinct from a proven medical effect.
