Overview

Dongdong is the sheep-shaped creature of Mount Taixi in the Shanhaijing’s third northern itinerary. It has a single horn and a single eye, with the eye located behind its ear. Its cry repeats its own name. The mountain has no vegetation but contains precious metal and jade, and two rivers are described as flowing from its slopes toward different receiving waters.

The eye is specifically behind its ear, giving the single-eyed body an unusual configuration. The rivers flowing from its mountain form the geographical setting of the short named notice.
