Overview

In XI, dhalmels are large mammals associated especially with Mindartia, recognizable by long necks, tan bodies and pale undersides. The specialist bestiary describes generally mild animals that become dangerous when threatened, including domesticated examples. A herd can support nearby animals rather than leaving each individual isolated. Encounter abilities include a heavy stomp, a defence-reducing Sonic Wave and Healing Breeze, which restores health around the user. Berserk changes the creature's offensive balance, so a peaceful-looking silhouette should not be mistaken for a harmless target. Wild Dhalmels, Bull Dhalmels and Marine Dhalmels are related encounter forms, not separate invented biological species in this compendium.

The family matters beyond battles. Square Enix's retrospective places Dhalmel Saliva among the Mhaura support-job quest requirements in the early game, alongside a Wild Rabbit Tail and Bloody Robe. Those item hunts made creatures part of an adventurer's access to a second job. Dhalmel hides also feed leatherworking and trade. The publisher's 2008 census discusses demand for hides, their use in synthesis and the inconvenience of obtaining them locally in places such as Buburimu. It compares auction-house and guild purchasing in that historical economy. This is evidence of the creature's material role in play, rather than a claim that the same prices or demand persist today. Meat and bones have their own uses in the specialist record.

First appearances & development

This profile follows Final Fantasy XI's 2002 setting and early support-job progression. The 2004 World Concept collection contains separately documented dhalmel artwork. Later regional and named versions remain grouped, and the economic discussion is explicitly the publisher's 2008 snapshot. No first appearance across all numbered Final Fantasy games is inferred from those dates.

Canon & continuity

Square Enix's 2002 retrospective documents the saliva quest requirement, and its 2008 census documents hide purchasing and synthesis demand. The official gallery identifies the artwork collection and beast classification. The specialist monster catalogue supplies appearance, temperament and combat abilities, allowing the account to separate game encounters, crafting resources and historical player behaviour.
