Overview
Demiguises are peaceful, herbivorous magical beasts from the Far East, with large dark eyes and long silvery hair. Invisibility protects them when threatened, while precognition makes pursuit difficult in a different way: a hunter must evade their anticipation, not merely locate an unseen body. The official guide combines an ape-like outline with sloth-like features. Their fine hair can be woven into invisibility cloaks, giving wizarding craft an interest in the creature’s pelt.
The film’s Dougal provides a particular example. The Lexicon’s indexed account identifies immediate-future perception based on probability and a change in eye colour during premonitions. It also describes his escape in New York, collecting sweets while watching over an Occamy. That reference distinguishes cloak material from the lasting Hallow: ordinary Demiguise-hair garments eventually lose their concealment. The distinction concerns manufactured objects, not a claim that the living creature’s defensive ability expires on the same schedule.
Framestore’s concept-art account documents a separate stage of the 2016 adaptation. Sam Rowan describes grey hair and wrinkled skin creating an impression of frailty, whereas the intended creature could be strong and dexterous. His lemur comparison explains that design goal. The page pairs bestiary text with artist testimony: concept development, rather than fictional lemur ancestry or proof that every sketch reached the final film.
First appearances & development
The 2001 companion bestiary supplies the selected species baseline; the 2016 film develops Dougal as an individual. Framestore’s design account concerns that adaptation. Deathly Hallows supplies a separate comparison between ordinary cloak manufacture and the Hallow, identified through the inspected reference index.
Canon & continuity
The official guide and complete Framestore written concept account were inspected. The Lexicon’s creature body supplies attributed book and film details; speculative notes about other cloak owners are excluded. The complete screenplay and novels were not newly read, and concept illustrations were not inspected as final-film evidence.
