Overview
Bowtruckles defend trees that provide suitable wand wood. Their bark-and-twig bodies, brown eyes and inconspicuous faces make them difficult to distinguish from their surroundings; the official guide gives a maximum height of about eight inches. The stated range includes western England, southern Germany and Scandinavian forests. This makes a wand-maker's search an encounter with an occupied habitat: obtaining wood can involve feeding the guardian woodlice or fairy eggs before approaching its tree.
Their long fingers combine fine manipulation with a defensive weapon. A peaceable animal can injure an intruder's eyes, and handling requires care even when it is small enough to hold. The publisher's account of Grubbly-Plank's lesson in Order of the Phoenix supplies a particular classroom example: students draw and label Bowtruckles, while a distracted Harry squeezes his specimen and receives cuts to his hand. The incident concerns provoked defensive behaviour, rather than an animal attacking every person it meets.
Pickett supplies a different relationship in the 2016 Fantastic Beasts film. He clings to Newt and resists returning to the other Bowtruckles, becoming a recurring companion rather than a representative of every wild guardian. His lock-picking ability helps Newt and Tina escape an execution attempt when he opens Newt's handcuffs. The same fingers therefore serve habitat defence in the species account and a rescue in an individual's story. Familiarity with Pickett does not make taking wood from an unfamiliar occupied tree harmless.
First appearances & development
The 2001 companion bestiary describes the species, while Order of the Phoenix (2003) places Bowtruckles in a Hogwarts lesson. The 2016 film develops Pickett as Newt's companion. These are separate publication and narrative contexts; the classroom account is not presented as the franchise's earliest appearance, and Pickett is not a new species.
Canon & continuity
The complete official creature guide supports anatomy, range, food and tree defence. Two publisher features supply the selected classroom incident and Pickett's handcuff escape. The bibliography identifies the underlying book and film contexts without claiming a new complete reading of those works, every illustrated edition or later adaptation.
