Overview
These bats extend the rulers' reach beyond the walls of the Castle of the Crystal. The official mythology identifies artificial lenses as the mechanism that relays visual information back to the central Crystal, joining an animal carrier with an imposed surveillance device. Their role is observation rather than the direct crushing violence of the Garthim. The two creations work together, with reconnaissance enabling forces at the castle to track targets beyond immediate sight.
The same official account describes breeding away an initial dependence on darkness so the spies can operate more broadly. That development belongs to the franchise's mythology, not a claim that ordinary bats can naturally transmit pictures through minerals. Crystal bats make an otherwise distributed living landscape available to a central power. Their collective function is described here without adding an invented range, signal frequency, reproductive timetable or separate entry for each flight shown.
First appearances & development
The 1982 film and its associated world-building establish crystal bats as part of the Skeksis' surveillance system. The World of the Dark Crystal supplies companion mythology, represented through the official encyclopedia here. This entry concerns that qualified franchise creature rather than every crystalline or magical bat in fantasy.
Canon & continuity
The official Darkened Creatures page explicitly describes the bred carriers, artificial lenses, image transmission and expansion beyond nighttime flight. The film and illustrated companion are the primary bibliography. Individual companion-book passages have not been freshly inspected, and no claim is made that the transmitting mechanism has a real-world optical equivalent.
