Overview

Cremlings are small, often many-legged creatures with elongated bodies, carapaces and claws, but no single appearance covers the whole label. Some are translucent enough for organs to show; others are brightly coloured, and certain varieties are poisonous or venomous. Their name is associated with crem, the sediment deposited by highstorms. The diversity matters when interpreting an animal observed briefly in a scene.

Many cremlings feed on dead animals or plants and occupy rock cracks, burrows and shallow pools during their early stages. They make the landscape active at a scale below greatshells and human travel, clearing remains and taking advantage of growth after storms. Some animals called cremlings are immature forms of larger creatures. A further complication is that Sleepless hordelings can resemble them, so a seemingly ordinary small scavenger is not always biologically what an observer assumes.

First appearances & development

The Way of Kings (2010) uses cremlings throughout Rosharan environments, with later novels and Dawnshard showing additional varieties and mistaken identifications. This profile retains the setting's broad vernacular category. It does not inflate that category into a single uniform species or count every described colour as a new creature.

Canon & continuity

The inspected Coppermind article indexes early chapters, Purelake material and Dawnshard chapter 8. It supports the broad category, varied anatomy and scavenging behaviour. The connection to immature larger animals is selective, and a cremlinglike appearance alone does not establish that a particular specimen is a Sleepless component.
