Overview

A Tai-na is both an animal and a place where a community can live. Its huge carapace supports soil, vegetation and buildings, while its legs reach down into the Reshi Sea. Inhabitants can cut stairways into the outer shell without treating it as ordinary living flesh. Its massive eye and mouth reveal the creature beneath what a distant traveller might take for an island.

Reshi communities worship these long-lived beings as gods and guard their relationship with the island's spren. The bond helps explain an animal large enough to bear an entire settlement. Rysn's encounter with Relu-na connects the local society, its living foundation and the gift of Chiri-Chiri. Food such as fruit may be offered, but the accounts do not fully explain what sustains so enormous a body. Inhabited space, movement and animal agency remain inseparable.

First appearances & development

Words of Radiance (2014), particularly Rysn's third interlude, gives the major Tai-na encounter. Later Stormlight material returns to the Reshi islands. Individual island names are not counted as different species, and the creatures' sapience is retained even though this profile's browsing priority emphasizes their corporeal greatshell ecology.

Canon & continuity

The inspected Coppermind account directly indexes Words of Radiance interlude I-3 and Oathbringer interlude I-13. It supports inhabited shells, spren association and Reshi worship. Statements about an unknown main diet or theoretical survival on land are not converted into a complete physiology absent from the primary witness.
