Overview

Cliff racers are aggressive flying reptiles with long tails and conspicuous dorsal sails. Their legless bodies make their silhouette distinct from the cliff striders and other similarly named local flyers. In Morrowind they detect travelers from above and can accumulate into a pursuing group, turning aerial space into a persistent hazard during an otherwise ordinary journey. The creature is therefore part of the player's experience of the landscape as well as its fictional fauna.

ESO is set in an earlier fictional era despite being released later, and its smaller or differently behaving depictions should not be read as a chronological sequel to Morrowind's wildlife. The citation-bearing reference separately identifies origin theories and unofficial statements, which this account does not treat as settled facts. The ordinary cliff racer remains the selected creature; a shared cliff-prefixed name alone does not erase the distinct anatomy or history of related flyers.

First appearances & development

Selected comparison: Morrowind (2002) and ESO (2014 onward). This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. Game lore and in-world narrators can conflict; gameplay abilities and playable body forms vary by title.

Canon & continuity

UESP's public MediaWiki API supplied the citation-bearing creature article; UESP is an independent reference, not an official publisher. Released games named in the bibliography are the canonical basis. In-game books, dialogue, mechanics and unofficial writings remain distinguishable within that reference. This task does not claim a complete replay or inspection of every later expansion.
