Overview

Chaefka, also known as tusk beasts or neldoruut in ancient-human terminology, are large furred animals encountered on the Ark. Their white coats help conceal them in snowy surroundings, while tusks, claws and a complex mouth make them dangerous at close range. The inspected reference identifies an omnivorous diet, so eating vegetation and hunting living prey are both part of the account. Their resemblance to a polar bear is a convenient visual comparison rather than a terrestrial origin.

A particularly unusual hunting trait involves emissions that affect the perception or behaviour of prey. Those fictional psychotropic effects are distinct from a simple intimidating roar, and do not become real medical claims. Hunters in the Dark supplies the expedition encounters, while the 2022 encyclopedia provides a second published treatment identified by the species reference. The animal's wide ancient distribution is presented as a mystery investigated by Lifeworkers rather than assigned an invented migration mechanism. Pack attacks and camouflage remain meaningful features without counting every preserved planetary population as another creature.

First appearances & development

Chaefka are treated as living animals in Peter David’s 2015 Hunters in the Dark, including encounters with the Ark’s engineered wilderness. The later encyclopedia supplies a second reference treatment. The tusk beast and Neldoruut names refer to the same animal here. This avoids counting an alternate descriptive name as a separate species or inventing a natural planetary migration.

Canon & continuity

Halopedia identifies the relevant Hunters in the Dark chapters and the 2022 encyclopedia treatment, separating narrative appearances from general reference descriptions. The original Jurassic Ark publisher feature is currently unavailable and is not treated as freshly inspected. Psychotropic hunting and snow camouflage are scoped to this documented animal; claims of naturally evolved ancestry are not added.
