Overview

A cauthooj is an agile, flightless predatory bird that uses its cry to make nearby prey turn violently on one another. It stalks remote settlements and waits patiently for isolated travellers. Its grasp of a few words does not permit ordinary speech. In battle, it can redirect a confused victim's attack and hop aside so an adjacent opponent receives a blow meant for the bird.

Its secluded lair can contain a collection of shiny objects taken from victims, including worthless ornaments mixed with valuables. Both second-edition treatments combine the warbling song with this collecting habit. The 2024 remaster calls its understood language Fey rather than Sylvan and explicitly describes thoughtsense as detecting non-mindless creatures. These terminology and rules changes are publication distinctions, not evidence of a new species. The bird's ability to incite violence does not mean it controls every action or speaks through its victims.

First appearances & development

This profile follows the named Pathfinder second-edition entries, keeping the 2019 legacy Bestiary separate from the 2024 Monster Core. These witnesses establish selected published treatments, not an exhaustive debut history. Other fantasy franchises' similarly named creatures do not automatically share this being's powers.

Canon & continuity

The licensed archive passages were inspected for the distinctive encounter behaviour and source page references. Repeated descriptions across editions are a shared textual witness, rather than two independent confirmations of every fact. The profile omits numeric combat statistics and does not claim a fresh reading of both complete rulebooks.
