Overview
The Pathfinder bulette is a thickly armoured burrowing predator whose dorsal fin can break the surface before it leaps onto prey. Its combination of subterranean movement and sudden emergence gives the familiar landshark nickname a concrete encounter pattern. It attacks large opponents and can threaten farming settlements. Both selected editions describe magical creation in the distant past, but they do not identify a reliable individual inventor. The suggestion of an elven creator comes from speculation about its refusal to eat elves; refusal to consume a body does not mean the creature will spare its living owner.
The two bestiaries give markedly different scales to its hunting ground: the 2009 first-edition account allows territories of about thirty square miles, while the 2019 second-edition description gives about five hundred. The later treatment develops lifelong pairing, a brief period of teaching young to hunt and expulsion after their first successful hunt. Those figures and life-history details should remain tied to the source version. Halflings are favoured prey in both treatments, with the second edition representing that preference directly in the rules. Its leaping attack also changes: first edition permits a charging jump followed by four claw attacks, while second edition's Leaping Charge determines strikes through the jump's achieved distance. The older dorsal-crest weak-spot story is presented as folklore, not a demonstrated special vulnerability.
First appearances & development
This profile covers the Pathfinder RPG Bestiary of 2009 and the legacy second-edition Bestiary of 2019. The creature has counterparts in other fantasy games, but their designs and creator histories are separate subjects. Territory size, breeding detail and leap rules here follow named Pathfinder editions rather than a franchise-wide average.
Canon & continuity
The licensed first- and second-edition entries were inspected for origins, dietary exceptions, territory, pairing and attacks. The large difference in territorial area is preserved explicitly. An alleged inventor and exposed-crest weakness remain uncertain traditions; neither account turns those suggestions into an independently documented creator identity or an automatic combat rule.
