Overview
The bulette combines a protective body with movement through the ground, turning open terrain into a possible approach route for a hidden predator. The legacy fifth-edition profile associates it with grassland, hills and mountains. Tremorsense detects ground-borne movement nearby, while a standing leap supplies substantial horizontal or vertical reach without requiring a run. Its Deadly Leap is a distinct landing attack, rather than an automatic consequence of every jump. Victims can resist the impact through strength or agility; a failed save brings damage and a fall, while success can move them out of the landing space. The procedure's occupied-space details matter when a tunnel or crowded battlefield leaves little room to retreat.
The revised profile extends tremorsense and gives the creature two bites in its ordinary attack sequence. Its leap mechanics also change: a bonus action supplies a long jump, while the revised Deadly Leap specifies movement expenditure, a nearby occupied destination and a Dexterity save. A successful defense pushes the target away from the bulette. This is a different procedure from the legacy action and its choice of saving throw, not evidence that all editions describe one fixed combat routine. Both treatments make burrowing and sudden emergence important, but their printed distances and action economy should be consulted separately.
James Haeck's 2020 Tunnel Terrors encounter demonstrates a further story use. A bulette erupts ahead of travelers, leaps into their path and can withdraw into a tunnel wall. Its attack also destroys two support beams, leaving the adventurers to prevent a collapse. That structural hazard belongs to the published scenario: it illustrates how the monster's mobility can threaten the surroundings without making beam destruction a universal species ability.
First appearances & development
This profile compares selected third- and fifth-edition bibliography with a published 2020 encounter. The 2025 revised manual uses the later rules family, although its publisher listing calls the product a 2024 manual. The encounter adds a particular mine-tunnel situation; it does not establish a separate bulette variety or a universal hunting ritual.
Canon & continuity
The official legacy and revised stat profiles support the movement and attack comparison. Haeck's complete encounter supplies the collapse example, explicitly kept separate from general monster rules. The 2000 manual is a historical bibliography witness whose full creature text was not independently reread during this treatment.

Family, evolution & connections
Small plastic monster toys in Gygax’s early gaming
In the interview, Gygax explicitly describes using plastic monsters and naming one the Bulette. This supports toy-based early representation and naming, without identifying a manufacturer, exact natural model or sole later rules author.
