Overview

Bingfeng appears in the Overseas Western Regions of the Shanhaijing, east of the country of Wuxian. It resembles a pig and has a head at both its front and its rear. Its coloring is black. The positioning follows the text’s sequence of distant lands, including Wuxian’s snake-bearing ritual figures, rather than a mountain-and-river itinerary. Its doubled anatomy is stated in a particularly compact entry.

A directly inspected plate in the Smithsonian’s digitized 1667 edition shows one porcine body with outward-facing heads at opposite ends. Its printed caption confirms the black coloring and position east of Wuxian.
