Overview

The Dominican cultural survey preserved by Centro León records a northern account in which a person gains wealth through a pact involving their own soul or a relative's. An enduring supernatural animal, the baká, accompanies that bargain. The same survey records related protective animal accounts in southern regional sections. It does not establish one animal shape that applies in every place, so no composite anatomy is supplied here.

The figure also enters Dominican art: Centro León catalogues Pedro Terreiro's Bacá en campo enmarañado, a 1996 acrylic painting from Puerto Plata. Artistic appearance and a folklore account are different kinds of witness. Together they establish cultural circulation while leaving the actual history of individual stories open. Sudden wealth or a family death should not be treated as evidence that a real person has made a supernatural pact.

Origins & earliest records

The regional survey is a modern compilation whose precise publication year was not established here. The museum records a specific 1996 painting, offering a dated reception witness rather than the tradition's birth. This profile does not infer an earliest Caribbean origin or a direct historical descent from other wealth-granting animal stories.

Records & interpretation

The survey supplies regional pact and animal motifs; the museum independently verifies Terreiro's work, date and medium. The collection does not identify a full interview chain for each assertion, and the artwork is not an ethnographic transcript. These sources support a bounded cultural profile, not accusations against wealthy neighbours or bereaved families.
