Overview
Guadalupe Vargas Montero’s Veracruz atlas recounts ancestors withdrawing headfirst into the earth when the sun arrived. Their continuing manifestations include small older spirits moving low and slowly, and younger beings recognized by dust-whirls. Some descriptions give three feet and movement by somersaulting or walking on the head. Sounds of laughter or river washing, food smells and warmth without a nearby hearth can signal an unseen presence.
Talia Lilith Lara Govea’s 2015 thesis distinguishes its account of earlier Loma Larga research from her own interview with Don Goyo, a healer of La Tinaja San Gabriel, Tantoyuca. He describes a woman seeing a dancing female figure and subsequently experiencing disturbed sight and hearing. He identifies Baatsik’ with swirling air and understands such encounters through relations with the earth. The thesis discusses these beings as ancestors and participants in a broader ritual world, rather than interchangeable European demons.
Origins & earliest records
The inspected atlas was published in 2010 and explicitly credits Anath Ariel de Vidas’s 2003 study for its Loma Larga account. Lara Govea’s thesis title page dates her work to June 2015. The ancestral withdrawal is a narrative of cosmic beginnings, not a dated historical migration.
Records & interpretation
The atlas and thesis share material derived from Ariel de Vidas, so those passages are not independent corroboration. Don Goyo’s named interview offers a separately attributed local perspective. Terms for older ancestors, younger beings and winds overlap within these sources; spelling variants are retained under one profile rather than multiplied into species.
