Overview

Aviar are not simply one bird species with one power. Different birds acquire supernatural talents associated with Patji, and a human companion can benefit from them. Sixth of the Dusk travels with Kokerlii and Sak: one offers concealment from mindsensing predators, while the other warns through visions of possible death. Their varied appearance and individual temperament accompany genuine practical differences between talents.

These birds link survival to the value of local knowledge. A companion's mental protection can matter more than weapons in the dangerous island ecology, while outside interest threatens to turn that relationship into an exploitable resource. Sanderson's FAQ compares many Aviar abilities with Cognitive effects and glimpses of the Spiritual Realm, but explicitly leaves room for powers without direct Allomantic counterparts. Their connection to wider Cosmere magic does not make every bird a feathered Mistborn.

First appearances & development

Sixth of the Dusk first appeared in Shadows Beneath in 2014. Later collected publication and Isles of the Emberdark expand the surrounding setting. The 2014 companion birds anchor this profile; earlier sequel readings are not automatically treated as equivalent to the finished later novel or as independent species debuts.

Canon & continuity

The inspected author catalog identifies the traditional Aviar trapper, Patji and outside exploitation. His FAQ directly qualifies comparisons with Allomancy. The Coppermind supplies source-indexed talent examples and species diversity. The account separates the two familiar birds' powers and does not assert that every Aviar foresees death or conceals minds.

Allomancy’s detection and concealment abilities (Aviar magic-design reference)

Sanderson expressly describes Aviar powers as variations on Cognitive detection/concealment and Spiritual glimpses also explored in Allomancy. He also notes abilities outside Allomancy; this is shared magic design, not a claim that the birds descend from Mistborn characters.

Jorge Jacinto’s customized Sixth of the Dusk ebook-cover illustration

Art director Isaac Stewart says Jacinto’s existing landscape was licensed and customized by adding Dusk and his birds to match the text. This describes a specific ebook-cover production process, not the literary origin of Aviar.
