Overview

A mistwraith's amorphous tissue can absorb bones and flesh, creating a body whose shape mixes the remains it has consumed. That unnerving outline fuels skaa fears about face-stealing beings in the mists, although the creatures ordinarily scavenge corpses rather than hunting living people. Their resemblance to kandra has a material basis, but mistwraiths lack the same unimpeded capacity for deliberate imitation.

Sanderson's direct explanation gives the condition an ethical dimension. Mistwraiths are transformed people whose connection between Physical and Cognitive Realms is obstructed, limiting their thought. They can be trained to some extent, but the author explicitly questions the ethics of treating them like domestic animals. Hemalurgic spikes can restore the capacity associated with kandra. Their frightening appearance therefore conceals a history of transformation and impaired agency, rather than proving inherent wickedness.

First appearances & development

The Final Empire (2006) introduces mistwraiths and fears associated with Scadrial's mists. The Hero of Ages later explains their connection to the Lord Ruler's transformation of Terris Feruchemists. Sanderson's 2012 clarification distinguishes their cognitive obstruction from a simple claim that the creatures have no human origin.

Canon & continuity

The inspected Coppermind record indexes The Final Empire chapter 8 and The Hero of Ages chapter 68's epigraph. Sanderson's forum answer directly supports the cognitive blockage and training ethics. His separate annotation also warns that mistwraiths should not be confused with the Watcher or the mist spirit.
