Overview
In Morocco, state institutions recognise Amazigh language and culture and acknowledge diversity within it. Ministry guidance on public services names three varieties, Tarifit, Tachelhit and Tamazight, and describes use of the Tifinagh script. This profile covers Moroccan communities and selected institutions only. It does not describe every Amazigh people across North Africa, and Tuareg communities are treated separately.
The Ajdir royal discourse of 17 October 2001 marks a turning point in this modern institutional history. It was followed by the founding of the Royal Institute of Amazigh Culture (IRCAM). By the 2007 school opening, IRCAM's Tifawin a tamazight materials covered the first five years of primary schooling. The sources consulted do not document earlier history, origins or regional customs.
IRCAM's stated mission is to safeguard and promote Amazigh language and culture in all forms. Its research covers history, anthropology, artistic expression, literature, audiovisual work, translation and education. Its language planning centre codifies writing, compiles dictionaries and grammar, develops modern terminology and collects traditional vocabulary. This standardisation serves schools, media and public life, but it does not mean local cultures are uniform. Public-service interpreting and Tifinagh signage carry recognition into everyday administration.
