Source-backed taxonomic record

Accepted species in Catalogue of Life’s 11 September 2026 base release. This preserves the source classification and available supporting data; it is not a completed species monograph.

Macquaria australasica
A highly endangered Macquarie perch. This exceptionally large specimen was caught on a lure fitted with barbless hooks (visible in the picture) in a high altitude upland river dominated by introduced Trout species and was carefully released.

The Macquarie perch is now extinct in most of its upland river habitats due to the total domination of these upland river habitats by introduced Trout species. Gross siltation from agricultural practices and flow regulation and thermal pollution by dams have also caused the extinction of Macquarie perch in some upland rivers.

The Macquarie perch (Macquaria australasica) is an Australian native freshwater fish of the Murray-Darling river system. It is a member of the family Percichthyidae and is closely related to the golden perch (Macquaria ambigua).

The Macquarie perch derives its scientific name from the Macquarie River where the first scientifically described specimen was collected (Macquaria) and a derivation of the Latin word for "southern" (australasica).
