Ctenochaetus striatus (Quoy & Gaimard, 1825)

Source-backed taxonomic record

Accepted species in Catalogue of Life’s 11 September 2026 base release. This preserves the source classification and available supporting data; it is not a completed species monograph.

Striated surgeonfish (Ctenochaetus striatus), Ras Muhammad National Park, Red Sea, Egypt. The striated surgeonfish can reach a maximum size of 24 centimetres (9.4 in) in length, but its common size is observed to be around 18 centimetres (7.1 in). C. striatus is one of the few herbivorous fishes which are occasionally toxic. Ciguatera poisoning is caused by the accumulation of a toxin produced by certain microscopic dinoflagellates which it ingests while feeding on algae. If a contaminated fish is eaten by humans, the concentrated poison contained within its tissues causes neurological damage
