Overview
Yanakona, Yanacona and Yanakuna appear in the community sources used here for a living Indigenous people of Colombia. A declaration published by CRIC in January 2013 locates its territorial concerns in the Colombian Andean-Amazonian massif and describes communities distributed across several departments. It presents Inka roots as the people's own account of identity. This collective self-description should not be turned into a biological classification, an archaeological continuity claim or an assertion that all Quechua-associated peoples share one political organization.
The same declaration dates the Cabildo Mayor's organizational origins to 1992 while tracing earlier organizing through preceding decades. Its Plan de Vida connects cultural renewal, territorial stewardship and community autonomy. Assemblies and dialogue among different forms of knowledge are central to this stated program. The declaration is a community political position: its demands and proposed negotiations do not establish that governments subsequently implemented them.
Contemporary literature offers a differently situated voice. In Jorge Consuegra's January 2015 interview, poet Fredy Chikangana describes writing as carrying elders' voices into wider conversation. He connects his work with memories of his grandfather, experiences away from home and extensive reading. His collaboration with Wayuu writer Vito Apüshana and Kamëntsá writer Hugo Jamioy produced Voces originarias de Abya Yala, which he discusses as bringing distinct languages and perspectives together. The proposed accompanying recording was still being developed at the interview date. This testimony documents one author's practice and collaboration; the book and recording have not been examined here.
A CRIC report dated 24 July 2026 places the twelfth regional educational minga in the Yanacona territory of Pancitará. The gathering involved children and young people from the eleven peoples represented in CRIC, rather than Yanakona participants alone. The report describes learning through planting, clay, textiles, painting, writing and conversation, linked to community responsibilities and territorial care. Its account emphasizes listening to younger participants in collective decisions. These are the organizers' descriptions of a particular gathering and its educational purposes, not independent measurements of long-term outcomes. Together, the sources show public cultural life taking place through assemblies, intercommunity education and authored literature, without making any one event or writer representative of every household.
An earlier CRIC communications report shows educational publishing being planned through intercommunity workshops. It describes a September 2019 visit to the Yanakona territory of Santa Marta, in Santa Rosa, involving both Yanakona and Inga participants. Students, parents, community authorities and educational facilitators discussed how to research, produce and distribute their own learning materials. Activities included presenting local projects, developing publication guidance, and teaching illustration and manual printing techniques. The report thus identifies practical editorial work alongside community discussion. Its proposed publications should not be treated as already completed books, and participation by two peoples does not imply a single shared language or government. The page is dated 16 September but describes activities on 16–17 September; that internal chronology is retained rather than silently corrected.
