Modern AI interpretation of scissor tailed flycatcher.
Modern AI interpretation of an adult male bird; fine plumage and imagined perch are schematic.
Overview
Cornell's identification account describes scissor-tailed flycatchers as slender kingbirds with stout bills and stiff, deeply forked tails. Adults have pale grey heads and bodies, blackish wings, white-edged dark tails and salmon-pink flanks. Males generally have longer tails and stronger colour than females, while juveniles have shorter tails and less pink. These age and sex differences prevent one adult portrait from representing every plumage state.
Kaufman describes birds watching from exposed perches, flying out to take insects and returning to eat them. They also hover while taking prey from vegetation or ground. Their varied diet includes grasshoppers and occasional fruit. Nests occur on trees, shrubs and some artificial supports in open country; utility wires are not required everywhere.
