Overview

The name is explained in Ferrand’s notice through a contrast with an ox. The represented beast has an ox’s body, but its head lacks horns and its hoof is not divided, resembling a horse’s in that respect. It inhabits forests around Mahavelona. The account assigns it plant-eating, insect-eating and human-eating habits and extraordinary speed: even when thought to be far away, it may reach someone immediately. These features belong to the collected description, rather than an identified zoological specimen.

The attack sequence concentrates on a person who tries to escape by climbing a tree. The beast keeps watch around the trunk and attempts tricks to make the person descend. If none works, it directs a strong jet of urine at the victim. To shield the face, the person releases the tree with both hands, loses balance and falls, becoming the animal’s prey. The printed notice ends with that fatal consequence. It does not describe a successful counter-trick, a hunter defeating the beast or a later rescue. Ferrand says he collected the account at Mahavelona itself and labels it Betsimisaraka; the individual speaker is not named. His geographical footnote identifies the locality with the French name Foulpointe, north of Tamatave.
