Overview

Red clover is a tufted, hairy perennial with leaves divided into three oval leaflets. These often bear a pale crescent. Its reddish-purple or pink flowers crowd into dense, rounded heads close to the upper leaves. Narrow, bristle-like stipule tips help separate it from the similar zigzag clover.

It grows in grassy places such as meadows, pastures, lawns and road verges, flowering from May to September in the British account. The New Zealand Plant Conservation Network traces its origin to Europe, western Asia and North Africa. It records the species as exotic in New Zealand, with naturalisation dating to 1867.
