Imagined community resource deliberation in an arid landscape.
Setting, tools and layout imagined; not ethnographic evidence.
Overview
NACSO records the launch of the ≠Aonin (Topnaar) Community Association in December 2021 with government assistance. Its elected committee represents residents of Namib Naukluft and Dorob parks in tourism and natural-resource matters, including equitable benefit distribution. This describes a particular representative institution, not the beginning of community identity or every Nama person.
Gobabeb identifies the ≠Aonin as Nama pastoralists with longstanding connections to the Kuiseb basin. Its research setting joins the Sand Sea, gravel plains and riverine woodlands. That institutional account situates contemporary community relations within an arid landscape; it does not authorise copying local ecological knowledge or treating every household’s livelihood as identical.
