Tolliver Groat

Overview

The L-Space reference places Tolliver Groat among the last two postmen still serving when Going Postal begins. He comes from an old postal family and has helped Stanley Howler adjust to life among people. Groat distrusts doctors and relies on his own eccentric remedies; the story turns those habits into unexpected protection when a banshee mistakes him for Moist because of the hat he is wearing.

Groat’s position changes as the Post Office recovers. In Making Money he covers for Moist as acting postmaster while Moist works with the bank and mint, gaining permission to wear the official hat. His progress gives the formerly oldest junior postman a succession of more senior responsibilities.
