Overview
The southern tamandua is a member of Myrmecophagidae in the order Pilosa. Its coat varies geographically: strongly marked southern animals have a dark shoulder-to-rump vest over a pale body, while other populations may be almost unmarked. A long, downward-curving snout ends in a very small mouth opening. There are four clawed forefoot digits and five hindfoot digits. The underside and terminal part of its grasping tail lack fur. It walks on the outer sides of its hands, avoiding its sharp claws.
Smithsonian accounts place this anteater in forests, savannas, scrub and mangroves across much of South America. Animals commonly occur near streams and rivers and shelter in tree hollows when inactive. Ants, termites and bees form its principal food. When threatened in a tree, a tamandua can balance on its hind legs and tail while presenting its strong forelimbs and claws. Hissing and anal-gland odour provide additional defensive signals. Coat variation means the conspicuous dark vest is a selected regional appearance rather than a universal species marking.
