Overview
Story of Duling and the Tagamaling describes a monthly alternation. During one month a Tagamaling consumes human flesh and is Buso; the next it does not and is called a god. The dangerous period is associated with the dark of the moon. Tagamaling houses occupy hardwood trees with broad branches. They look nearly golden but normally disappear from an approaching observer, although food odors may remain.
Duling and his younger brother hear an invitation to a celebration in one such house. A woman descends to invite Duling; when he embraces her, he finds himself holding a thorny bush. The woman’s voice then mocks him from above. Duling becomes a rock, while his brother marries the Tagamaling woman. The account connects the transformation to a recognizable mountain rock west of Santa Cruz.
