Overview
The Australian Museum describes Synanceia verrucosa as a camouflaged fish resembling encrusted rock or coral. Brown or grey individuals may bear coloured patches. A deep depression separates its eyes, contrasting with the bony ridge between the more elevated eyes of the estuary stonefish. It inhabits rubble and coral bottoms and can use its pectoral fins to bury itself partly in sand.
Fishes of Australia describes a broad depressed head, scaleless warty skin, fleshy pectoral fins and a large mouth that opens upward with a nearly vertical gape. Its fin account usually records thirteen dorsal spines but allows variation. The species waits for fishes and other small marine prey rather than continuously pursuing them. Its venom-bearing dorsal spines are defensive structures; no treatment guidance or universal size is inferred here.
Grobecker’s primary study synopsis reports regular and high-speed cinematography used to investigate feeding modes dependent on prey location. The experimental question concerns a repertoire of movements associated with the ambush site, not merely a single speed record. The accessible synopsis does not supply a numerical strike duration or warrant reconstructing detailed unseen kinematics.
Origins & earliest records
Bloch and Schneider named it in 1801; its ancestry is a separate question.
