Overview
The Skolt Saami Siida Administration describes a longstanding community self-government system supporting rights, livelihoods, language and culture. Joint siida meetings are its highest decision-making body, with elected councils and a trustee serving three-year terms. Its account emphasises community involvement and cooperation with authorities, rather than treating self-government as a recent substitute for community life.
Suõnn is an association founded by Skolt Saami artists and influencers whose members descend from Suõ’nnjel. Working in Helsinki and Inari, members practise visual arts, dance, music, film and communication. The collective supports Indigenous creative cooperation and cultural and linguistic vitality through projects reflecting members’ aspirations. This is one contemporary artistic organisation, not a representative style assigned to every Skolt Saami person.
The Sámi Museum’s account identifies historical Skolt settlements in areas now within Russia, Finland and Norway. Following wartime evacuation from Suonikylä, people settled around Sevettijärvi and Näätämö in 1949. The Heritage House now combines historical interpretation with a village meeting place. This institutional scope preserves the community’s cross-border history while distinguishing it from a general account of all Sámi peoples.
