A Singo Barong Taiwan performer carries the tiger-faced mask and peacock-feather fan of Ponorogo Reog. The museum documents this Indonesian diaspora troupe in Taiwan; the photograph shows a performance representation, distinct from the particular Tengger narrative discussed in the article. Photograph date and individual photographer are not specified.

Overview

The official Indonesian Reog Tengger account identifies Singa Barong as the magical lion-like creature represented by a large tiger- or leopard-headed mask beneath a fan of peacock feathers. The performer supports the heavy mask with the teeth, and in some displays carries another performer above it. These are statements about the material performance as well as the mythical figure.

In the story presented there, King Klono Sewandono journeys toward Kediri to seek Princess Songgo Langit and is attacked by the peacock-crested monster. The battle includes supernatural prowess. The account distinguishes Tengger performance innovations from Ponorogo practice. It does not make this Reog antagonist the same character as Bali’s protective Barong Ket merely because their names overlap.
