The Nation identifies itself as Coast Salish, with continuing relationships to the Sunshine Coast’s land and waters. Its culture department supports language revitalization, oral-history events and pronunciation work with Elders, alongside protection of culturally significant sites.
Elders’ language-revival work began in the early 1970s. Collaboration with linguist Ron Beaumont produced the Sechelt Dictionary, published in 2011. The Nation describes continuing curriculum translation and work with FirstVoices, where communities curate language resources.
